    Wheel taken from the Beehive in Salem.  Used for raising and lowering false floors or ceilings for hiding runaway slaves.  After the Beehive was razed, the wheel was relocated to the Lewelling Museum.

    The last photo of the Joseph Hoag house at about 1890 335th street.  The house had a secret hiding place for slaves beneath the stairs.  The house was torn down in the 1930's to make way for Howard and May Garretson's new home.

    Lewelling House, Salem, Iowa - Ethel Van Hon Garretson commissioned this 1960's painting of what previously was called the Garretson house.  Owned by the Garretson family for many years, upon becoming an Underground Railroad museum, it was  renamed the Lewelling house, after the man who built it in the early 1840's and then left for Oregon in 1846.
